Big Bang are without a doubt one of the most influential groups in K-Pop history. They not only the first group to have their own light stick, which was designed by member G-Dragon, no they also made Kpop global in 2011. They laid an important milestone in the music scene.
But how did it all begin? Big Bang were put together by YG Entertainment in 2006 and consisted of 5 members at the time. However, some of them were already active in the entertainment industry before their debut. G-Dragon had been with YG as a trainee since he was 11 years old, and he was also the one who brought T.O.P on board when he heard about the plans for a boy group. Seungri had previously appeared on the television program "Let's Cokeplay: Mnet Battle Shinhwa."
The development of Big Bang was also featured on a television show at the time, with 6 members originally, but Hyun-seung had to leave the group before they debuted.
On August 19, the 5 boys debuted at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena for the YG Family 10th Year Concert. Shortly after, they released their first EP "Bigbang" which sold over 40,000 copies. In the next albums you could see a change in their music as they focused more on electronic music. Most of it was written and produced by G-Dragon. The group met with immediate success, landing several number 1 hits with ever-increasing sales. However, the quick success also had its pitfalls, as the group suffered an exhaustion at the end of 2007, which is why they took a short break. Nevertheless, their fan base grew immeasurably, which is why they got the "Artist of the Year", "Best Male Group" and "Song of the Year" awards in the same year.
Big Bang also quickly made it to the top in Japan. With the singles "Koe o Kikasete" and "Tell Me Goodbye" they occupied the Japanese charts several times and made it into the drama "Ohitorisama". At the 52nd Japan Record Awards, "Tell Me Goodbye" secured them the "Song of the Year" award.
Until the end of 2010, the members tended to concentrate on solo projects. 2 years later finally came the new EP "Tonight" which then also brought the worldwide breakthrough. At the MTV Europe Music Awards Big Bang won against Britney Spears and Lena Meyer- Landrut and won in the category "Best Worldwide Act". Of course, this caused quite a stir in the press, as no one had expected the group, which was previously unknown in the West. The international success did not stop there, because in 2012 the boys made it with the album "Alive", as the first K-Pop group in the US Billboard charts. A worldwide tour was now also not to be missed. More and more often they also made it into the European charts. Big Bang are considered at the time, as the most successful K-Pop group of all time and rightly so.
After a 2-year break, Big Bang celebrated their 10th anniversary with the album "MADE". In addition, the documentary film "Big Bang Made", which depicted the history and development of the group. After that it became quiet around the guys, at least the positive headlines became less. Several scandals around some members were going around. Member Seungri left the group in 2019 because of the "Burning Sun" scandal. The "Burning Sun" scandal is considered the worst scandal in K-pop history so far.
In 2022, the comeback finally came after a long time with the track "Still life", but at the same time, member T.O.P also announced that he was leaving the entertainment.
Big Bang are and remain a big part of K-Pop history, which has strongly influenced the scene and its development.
